BSC 307 Unit Plan Assignment Part 1.pdf One of the keys to being an effective science teacher is the ability to plan on a global level, with the vision to design and implement entire units. Your assignment is to design a 10-12 day unit based on your textbook chapter. Use the template provided to complete your assignment.
My unit plan was on DNA and RNA. I focused on the aspects of DNA replication, transcription, and translation from RNA to amino acids. All of my objectives were tied to the stage I 12A3 state standard. Many of my objectives were centered around activities that would help students visualize each process.
This unit plan covers the Biosphere. The major concepts include levels of organization, energy flow, and the cycles of matter. Asides from understanding the main concepts, I implemented interactive technology and group projects in order to have students engage in higher levels of thinking.
My unit plan covers Cell Growth and Cell division. The major concepts focused on are how cell growth is impacted by surface area to volume ratios, the phases of how the cell divides, and the main focus is on Mitosis. Many of the objectives are centered around identifying the different phases and the structures present, there is also some information about cell growth regulation and cancer.
This unit plan covers cellular respiration, the stages involved, and the related processes of alcoholic fermentation and photosynthesis. Cellular Respiration can be an extremely dry and difficult concept to learn so I have integrated a lot of partner discussion and group work. Learning the basic process of cellular respiration provides a base for understanding of countless scientific concepts. I have also included interactive activities such as web quests, poster projects, and Jackie's Krebs Cycle Locomotion activity to engage students.
My unit plan is on the evolution of populations. The main points include Darwin’s theory of evolution, the mechanisms of evolution, and the effects on populations and entire ecosystems. Much of the focus of this unit is on the consequences of change. Many of my objectives ask students to explain the significance of one aspect of evolution, requiring them to think through the mechanisms involved and all possible outcomes.
This Unit plan covers Cell Structure and Function. The concepts associated with this unit are: cell theory, prokaryotes vs. eukaryotes, organelle functions, organelles in plant & animal cells, functions of cell membrane & cell wall, diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion, active transport, unicellular and multicellular organisms, and the levels of organizations. The objectives are based around what makes up a cell and how everything works together as a cohesive unit.
This Unit Plan covers The Introduction to Genetics. The concepts cover the areas of: The Work of Gregor Mendel, Probability and Punnett Squares, Exploring Mendelian Genetics, and Linkage and Gene Maps. One area that I got rid of was the section on Meiosis. The objectives are based around the areas I listed above.
This Unit Plan covers Photosynthesis. The concepts associated with this unit are: energy, autotrophs and heterotrophs, ATP, photosynthesis equation, light-dependent reactions (ATP and NADPH), Calvin cycle, and several factors that play a role in photosynthesis. Learning the basic process of photosynthesis provides a base for understanding following concepts about the environment.
